How do I customize module layers on the GIS Map?

Change how your module layers look and behave so you can make your GIS map clearer, more meaningful, and easier to read.

If you’ve already added a module layer to the GIS map (see How do I add module layers to the GIS map?), you can customize it to match your workflow. Customization lets you choose how the data is displayed, rename layers for clarity, control visibility, and even color-code records based on field values.

Customize a module layer

Follow these steps to adjust an existing module layer on the GIS map.

  1. Open the map – From the Home page, click the Map icon in the navigation menu.

  2. Expand Module Layers – Click the arrow next to Module Layers to see all layers currently available.

  3. Find the layer you want to customize – Locate it in the list and click the wrench icon to open layer settings.

Customization Options

Adjust Layer Type

Choose the type of layer to visualize your information. You have the following options:

  • Marker: show push pin markers on the map
  • Parcel boundaries: shades the surrounding area
  • Geo fields (if available in your module): Utilizes specific geographical data fields to denote where records are located or draw boundaries on the map.

Change Layer Name

The default name will be the name of the view, but you can change it to something more descriptive and relevant. This helps in easily identifying the layer on the map. Below the name field, you'll see the source view information, which is helpful if you make significant changes to the layer name.

Public Map Visibility

Use the radio button to toggle whether the layer is visible on the public map. This button will turn green when toggled on.

Note: Only system administrators should adjust this setting to maintain control over publicly shared data.

Base Color Customization

Select a base color for the markers (or pins) representing the data points on the map. This helps in visually distinguishing different layers.

Add Custom Color Pins to Segment Data

Segment your data more effectively by customizing additional pins based on the values from any drop-down fields within the module. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Select the drop-down field: Choose the drop-down field that the segment will be based on.
  • Choose the value: Select the specific value from the drop-down field.
  • Assign a color: Assign a color for that value.
  • Click the +Add button to add as many segments and custom colors as needed to provide clear visual differentiation for various data points.

In the example below, within concerns "In Progress", all the "Pothole/Street Repair" concerns will appear as markers in purple.

Save/Delete Layer:

  • After making all necessary adjustments, ensure to save your changes.
  • If the layer is no longer needed, you can delete it to keep your interface organized.

Customizing your module layers allows you to tailor the GIS Map to your specific needs, providing a clearer and more effective way to manage and visualize your data. By leveraging these options, you can enhance your analysis, improve decision-making, and ensure that the information displayed on your map is both accurate and meaningful.
