What is the difference between Cancel and Close on a record?

Any user who opens a record will see Close in the bottom toolbar, and Cancel appears once you start editing. They look similar but do different things. Knowing which one to click keeps you from losing changes or leaving a record you meant to stay on.

Cancel

Cancel only appears while you are in edit mode. It discards all unsaved changes and takes you back to viewing the record. The record stays open. Use it when you want to undo your edits without leaving the record.

Close

Close closes the record entirely and returns you to wherever you came from, such as the Data Viewer or the Property Profile. If you have unsaved changes when you click Close, GovPilot shows a warning before it proceeds.

Quick reference

  • Cancel undoes your edits and keeps the record open.
  • Close leaves the record.
  • Save keeps your changes and stays on the record.
  • Save and Close keeps your changes and leaves the record.

✅ Pro Tip: If you want to keep your changes and leave the record in one step, click Save and Close rather than saving and then closing separately.
